Become an active consumer - Look for recalled products in your house

Here are some activities that you can do to help find recalled products and get them out of commission:

First, you need to know what you're looking for, so go to www.recalls.gov and see what's there. You might familiarize yourself with the site by thinking about the different types of products that can be recalled, and noticing the different government agencies responsible for these. For example, check out the Consumer Product Safety Commission's site to look for consumer products like toys, gadgets, and appliances. Check out the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for infomation about car seats. Here are some questions that you might want to answer.

Second, print out or draw a WANTED poster of something that has been recalled that you want to search for in your house or in your community. Here's an example made by a Kids Risk Detective.

Finally, use your excellent observer skills to see what you find. If you have a bunch of old stuff around your house that might have been recalled, then check it out and see. If you find something, then take action. Make sure that you appreciate the Power of Attention.
